What Does Yuka Look At?
For food products, Yuka considers three main areas:
🥗 Nutritional Quality — 60%
This looks at nutritional factors such as calories, sugar, sodium, saturated fat, protein, fiber, and other nutritional information.
🧪 Additives — 30%
The app also looks at certain additives contained in food products and provides information based on its evaluation system and scientific sources.
🌱 Organic Certification — 10%
Products with recognized organic certification may receive additional points.
And It Isn't Just for Food!
One thing I found especially interesting is that Yuka can also be used for many cosmetics and personal care products.
Think about all the products we use every day—lotions, shampoos, deodorants, makeup, and other personal care items. Most of us probably don't spend much time reading every ingredient on the label!
With a quick scan, Yuka can help you learn more about what is inside those products.
A Little Knowledge Can Go a Long Way
I am not suggesting that we become afraid of everything we eat or use. And, of course, no app can replace advice from a doctor, nutritionist, or other qualified healthcare professional.
But I do believe that knowledge is power.
Sometimes, we continue buying the same products simply because they are familiar. We may have been purchasing them for years! But what if taking just a few seconds to scan an item could help us become more aware of what we are bringing into our homes?
The next time you go grocery shopping, why not give it a try?
Scan a few of your favorite foods. Scan something you eat regularly. Scan a personal care product you use every day.
You may be surprised by what you discover!
At the very least, it may encourage you to read labels more carefully, ask more questions, and become a more informed consumer.
And in my opinion, that is always a good thing.
Have you tried the Yuka app? If so, what was the most surprising product you scanned?
